Empower: abilities Announces Relocation to Support Growth and Expanded Services

2/23/2026

Springfield, MO — Empower: abilities, a nationally recognized Center for Independent Living, has announced plans to relocate to a larger, more strategically located facility in Springfield. The move is driven by organizational growth and the need for expanded space to better serve individuals with disabilities and older adults throughout southwest Missouri.

The new location will allow empower: abilities to increase capacity across multiple service areas, including advocacy, youth and adult programming, and durable medical equipment access. The expanded footprint also makes room for an expanded durable medical equipment and assistive technology showroom, where individuals can explore mobility equipment and accessibility solutions in a hands-on environment.

“Our services and reach have expanded significantly, and this move positions us for the next phase of that growth,” said CEO Shannon Porter. “The new space allows us to operate more effectively, serve more individuals, and increase our visibility within the community.”

In addition to increased square footage, the new site offers:

• A more visible location supporting outreach and community engagement

• Improved accessibility for individuals seeking help

• Centrally located with easy access to essential shopping locations

• Convenient access to public transportation, making services easier to reach for individuals who rely on public transportation/bus system

The relocation reflects a long-term investment in infrastructure that aligns with the organization’s mission while supporting operational sustainability and service expansion. Proceeds from the sale of the current building will offset relocation costs.

Empower: abilities is a Center for Independent Living with more than 40 years of experience serving individuals with disabilities across Southwest Missouri. The organization offers advocacy, education, independent living skills, peer support, youth services, consumer directed care, and access to equipment and resources that promote independence, inclusion, and community participation.

Additional details, including the new address and move timeline, will be announced in the coming weeks.
