Financial and Insurance Specialist
Job Summary:
The Financial and Insurance Specialist is responsible for the running of insurance eligibility and contacting patients who have an insurance that is not active or not running in our system. Financial and Insurance Coordinator are the patient’s point of contact for financial assistance and insurance questions. The Financial and Insurance Coordinator sets up payment arrangements as appropriate, advises patients in person and over the phone on their insurance coverage or lack thereof. They will also meet patients to do annual financial consults to update their yearly paperwork. As well as work on Prior Authorization in the clinic.
Independent judgement and decision making is required to address the full range of tasks and responsibilities. The position requires the ability to plan, schedule and organize numerous tasks that directly impact the clinic and the patient’s ability to obtain medical care.
Responsibilities:
Maintains a sense of calm and remain composed while dealing with sensitive patient issues
Updates insurance records and financial consults
Maintains the strictest confidentiality following HIPPA and APO policy and procedures
Attends scheduled meetings as needed
Performs data entry and scanning of data
Attends training when required or requested by their direct supervisor
Attends APO required functions
Serve as the point of contact for all financial assistance questions (when appropriate)
Setting up of payment plans with patients
Assess the current insurance situation of patients, serving as the technical expert in confirming patient’s insurance eligibility.
Be able to explain the sliding fee scales APO has in place
Communicate professionally and timely with internal and external customers
Provide helpful assistance in anticipating and responding to the needs of our patients
Work with nursing staff to address Prior Authorizations
Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
HS diploma or GED
One to two years of experience in the health care field, preferably with insurance, financial, and prior authorizations capabilities
Have a understanding of Medicaid and Medicare
Must be proficient in Word and Excel
Must be organized and a multi tasker
Must have experience with an EMR (Electronic Medical Record)
Must possess excellent communication & data entry skills
Must be autonomous and get work done on a daily basis with minimal supervision
Must have an aptitude and willingness to lean new responsibilities
Willingly accepts feedback
Flexible and innovative
Ability to problem solve and work independently
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer and standing, bending and moving.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
The ability to complete assignments in all types of weather
May be exposed to patients with infectious disease
Hours of duty are normal office hours with occasional evening and weekend tasks.
APO is a non-profit community based organization serving a 29 county region in southwest Missouri. APO currently serves over 700 clients living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Concerned families and friends established the organization as a grass roots entity in 1983. Services include: medical care, case management, education to the general public, and services to person living with HIV infections, their families and significant others in a confidential, caring environment. We also offer primary medical care to those who are not living with HIV in a safe inclusive environment.
